The first Tri-ang model of "Lord of the Isles", also known as the "Dean Single", hit the shops in 1961. Appearing on its own and in train packs with clerestory coaches, it was always as 3046, until 2008. After a gap in production of some 25 years, in 2007 Hornby revamped the model fitting a new motor and chassis, as well as vastly improving the printing of the details. So far we have seen, in addition to yet another "Lord of the Isles" train pack, "Lorna Doone" and "Duke of Edinburgh" as single engines, with "Royal Sovereign" in the "Flying Dutchman" train pack. For 2010 another train pack has been announced, in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway, "Great Western" was a name from one of the first build lots, not really a match for the model. All of the models to date have lacked the prototypical full set of armorial details on the centre splasher. The former "Magnadhesion" models also had a centre crest that was incorrectly enlarged and rather crude, they also lacked the front numbers.
Here we present all the details that you will need to rename, correct and complete one of the models, including spare decals in case of any problems when doing so:
- Metallic gold lettering on black curved nameplates as filmless decal patches,
- Splasher centre arms disk in one of two sizes and the missing side crest plates as filmless decals,
- Metallic gold with fine red line on a black backing for filmless engine side number plates,
- Warm yellow with black drop shading numbers for the front buffer beam on clear film carrier,
- Red buffer beam number covering patch where required.
These decals can be fitted without any painting of the model and removed later with no damage if required. Below is a "Lorna Doone" re-named as "Duke of Connaught". Inset top right a scan of the splasher plate crest and coat of arms details.

If you have an older model you can either simply cover up the splasher centre arms with improved but equally over-sized new details, or remove that crude factory printing to fit new smaller scale-sized arms. Usually such printing can be removed by carefully rubbing the selected area with a cotton bud dipped in paint solvent - methylated spirits or white spirit / turpentine - kitchen / bathroom cream cleanser is another way to lightly abraid the surface.
While any name option will fit over a "Lorna Doone" or "Lord of the Isles" model, note that "Royal Sovereign" and "Duke of Edinburgh" are larger printed nameplates that can only be covered up with similar large name options or an extra wide black name.
Finally, select the name and number you would like from the table below.
A complete list of all the actual names applied, including variations with
re-naming, for the Achilles Class engines - so called after the first member
of the class. The option to have any other custom name & number is at the bottom:
For a custom name, please enter the exact lettering that you would like in the box above. Each character of the name will be printed in UPPER-CASE, with any "OF" or "OF THE" in smaller height. When you are happy with the selection entered above, click on "Add To Cart" below to purchase the desired decals. For each additional set of names, re-select and "Add To Cart" again. Each decal set costs £14.99.
