See our feature article from the home page for more details of the real Northern Belle train.
It is possible to complete an accurate or shorter representative rake of Northern Belle coaches using Hornby models - formerly the Dapol/Mainline/Airfix Mk2s or Lima Mk3 sleepers - and a suitable base buffet coach model. In real life there are two buffet coaches and two sleeper coaches - at least one of each type is normally used in the train. There is a single Mk2 brake car, and a selection of six first class Mk2 cars, most if not all of which usually run.
Hornby's steam traction train set, once available through Clifford James, had the brake ("CAR No 17167") with two of the first class cars ("WARWICK" & "GLAMIS"). One of the sleepers ("CREWE") was released as a solo item in 2006. For 2012 a train pack with 47790 and three Mk2 coaches have been announced ("CHATSWORTH", "BELVOIR" & "CAR No 17167" again), plus three separate coaches in a pack repeating two more from the original set ("HARLECH", and again "WARWICK" & "GLAMIS"), and a Railroad range simplified non-existent 47862 in the style of 47832 "Solway Princess" but with no name. Modern traction Class 67 locos have also hauled the train.
See also our L90A pack for the plain window frostings and generator room grills (for the brake coach), VSOE etched monogram and door window oval inserts (for first class coaches) - not all coaches were initially fitted with those, but they are all to be so treated.
Our L90B pack has label panels to help create either buffet car - with for example some repainting of a Bachmann 39-105 RMB coach.
Alternatively, we have a decal set D90-I for making one of the restaurant cars with some body filling and a bit more painting required.
Our other D90-* packs have decals for making 47832 or 47790, perhaps by improving on the Hornby Railroad model.
Here we present full length coach top and bottom thin plastic film side panel sets for each of the Mk2 and Mk3 coaches - because of the moulded lumps around the centre doors, our brake coach panels are not for the entire side, but just the bottom sections on each end. These are made to order from your chosen rake selections. Each set contains panel sets for both sides, with some different strips dependant on the type of coach body. Each set of Mk2 First class coach panels includes VSOE mongrammed platform carpet labels (as in our L90A pack), to help more model passengers board in luxury!
The lining and scroll work are all reproduced from actual photographs of the train. the details are different, simplifed somewhat, compared with the umber and cream Pullman cars of old. We were given special permission by the owners Sea Containers, to reproduce the VSOE and Northern Belle logos, indeed we were asked by them to photograph the real train to assist Hornby with their productions.
With our panels, renaming a duplicate train set coach is a doddle. Repainting some other livery of coach is also made straight forward with our panels to provide most of the lining and other livery details easily. Note some further lining work will be required for the door areas when painting out other liveries.
The "BALMORAL" sleeper is the latest addition to the formations, it was formerly "2194" in the Royal Train. Unlike other sleeper coaches, it is fitted to take a tail board, making it the ideal end to your model rake. The easiest model to convert to "BALMORAL" will of course be the Hornby "CREWE" coach. "CAR No 17167" was recently re-named as "MOW COP".
Note: Lima also produced Mk2 coach models, however those are shorter than the bodies used by Hornby, and these panels are not suitable therefore for the Lima bodies.
